Entering the Endgame

Q: When does the Endgame start, or more specifically, when do I focus on endgame objectives instead of midgame objectives?

A: When at least one of the following is true:

  • When endgame objectives make more sense then midgame objectives.
  • When one or both sides has a sustainable ability to threaten mate.
  • When one player has only two pieces, besides the king and pawns.

General Objectives for the Endgame:

  1. Realize advantage

    • If a player has a material advantage, it should be exploited, even material should be exchanged (maintain mating material!), pawns should be slaughtered, enemy king should be exposed and contained. Be careful to maintain the initiative.

    • If a player has a material loss, exchanges should be stringently avoided, (unless a draw can be forced by exchanging for insufficient mating material). Focus should be on pawn promotion. The King must be mobile and employed as a fighting piece. Try to achieve the initiative and maintain it.

    • If neither player has a clear material advantage, focus should be on achieving and maintaing initiative. Initiative can be effected by advancing pawns and attacking the king, otherwise play as if the other player has the advantage. Be careful to adapt your style rapidly when an advantage does manifest.

  2. Pawns - Pawns should be employed in a promotion attempt or block or employed as a defensive escort for the King.

  3. Trap & Kill - The King is restricted into a continuously decreasing area, until he can be attacked sucessfully. Defensive Kings should be active as a fighting piece, but when overwhelmed, should try to manuever for a Stalemate.
