Passivity leads to open play in this Four Knights variation of the English - a "flank" opening characterized by the first move, c4.

A stand-offish attitude from both sides results in an opening which is both fairly symmetrical and centered, but which is rather open for play by either side. Typical play tends to similarities with the Nimzo-Indian.
