Evaluating Exchanges

Evaluating of Potential Exchanges

I. General Principals

  • Default to NO - If you're not sure, avoid the exchange.
  • Point values - Avoid exchanges of inadequate value. (P-1, N-3, B-3, R-5, Q-9)
  • Especially in the Endgame - Don't exchange if you're behind in material.

II. Specific Considerations - Active

  • Attack defensive structures by exchanging against supporting pieces.
  • Disable attack formations by exchanging passive pieces for active pieces.
  • Exchange for up to 2 pt loss for clear positional advantage, such as exposing a king.
  • Exchange equally to simplify or open a position.

III. Specific Considerations - Passive

In the case of static positions offering exchange to either side, there are three major considerations.

  • Supporting pieces - often multiple pieces attacking/defending the same square, make sure the exchanges would not result in a material loss in the end.
  • Tempo - somtimes a change in tempo can be affected by an exchange.
  • Position - the positional effects vary depending on who initiates the exchange.
