Visualizing Knight Moves

Knight moves


The moves possible to a knight are not easily visualized, and even experienced players may miss some 2nd and 3rd move possibilities.

The first thing to do is to practice with the knight's move pattern until the "L" shaped single move becomes natural.

Then, consider a 7x7 square:

  • The second diagonal square from the knight takes 4 moves to reach,
  • All other same color squares take 2 moves to reach,
  • Opposite color squares take 3 moves to reach.

Being aware of the notes above will help, but the knight still takes practice. I also recommend working through the K,B,N vs K endgame, and I also plan to post an exercise or two here in the future...
